Mediums

Risograph Printing, Cast Light Photography, & Letterpress

This project is an in-depth exploration of how typography can be both expressive and functional, investigating the relationships between material, form, and visual language. The work moves from practical applications to artistic experiments, showing how individual alphabetic characters can take on unique qualities depending on the medium.

The process involved hands-on experimentation across four different mediums: letterpress, risograph printing, digital composition, and cast light and shadow. Each medium presented its own challenges and opportunities. Letterpress allowed for multi-layered printing and color blending; risograph experiments explored translucency and texture; digital compositions focused on precise control of form and layout; and cast light and shadow investigations looked at how light interacts with physical forms to create new visual effects.

The final deliverables include a complete book with original spreads and a cover design, accompanied by a promotional poster. This collection celebrates typography while highlighting my process, experimentation, and dedication to making material, form, and language visible through design.

Individual letter explorations from all designers are assembled into a single book.

Statement:
"In this project, I explored the letter “f” across four mediums: riso printing, letterpress, cast light, and digital. I focused on the distinct shapes of both uppercase and lowercase “f,” experimenting with how each form could be expressed and manipulated. Each medium provided a unique way to engage with the letter, offering new textures, interactions, and visual possibilities that highlighted this letter’s versatility and dynamic nature."
