Read Beyond the Book is a public awareness and educational campaign focused on early childhood literacy in North Carolina, particularly in areas labeled as book deserts, like Charlotte. The project began with research and interviews with educators, librarians, and caregivers to understand barriers to literacy and identify opportunities for practical, everyday engagement.

The design approach is illustrated and approachable, using playful visuals such as books placed on groceries, mail, and other everyday objects to show that reading can happen anywhere. Messaging was crafted to encourage parents and caregivers, emphasizing small, achievable actions that integrate literacy into daily routines without adding pressure.

The campaign includes brochures, posters, and social media content strategically placed in public spaces like bus stops, libraries, grocery stores, and community centers. Through thoughtful design, research-driven strategy, and user-centered messaging, the campaign empowers caregivers to see themselves as their child’s first teacher and fosters a culture where literacy is a natural, enjoyable part of everyday life.
